ID Chips May Be Inevitable
The technology has recently found use by Lego, to allow parents to track kids in Legoland parks. Even stranger, the ID tagmaker Verichip has successfully demonstrated implanted RFID chips. We can't help but think that like ubiquitous cellphone cameras, this may be one thing that our "social technology" cannot currently handle. This balance of object and social context for the object is a central conflict in design - One that is responcible for many(and perhaps, in part, all) of the truly disastrous product failures the human race has seen: The compact car in the US(until the mini got it right), the Segway(we hate to say it, but...), The Laser Disk, and so many others. Companies keen on introducing RFID - based technologies would do well to take this into consideration, and maybe consider an alternate route. Because from where we're sitting, the backlash has already begun.
