Track to Interact

Your point of purchase and interior designs may finally be able to keep an eye on users. A montreal-based company has developed new computer vision software package that opens up exciting possibilities to designers working in in spaces. Check out what it could mean for you.

Freeset, a Montreal new media design group has developed People Locator, a software package which identifies people in a camera's video feed. The software outputs information about number of people, size of people, and x and y co-ordinates of the person from the display. These variables can be fed into flash animations to create completely interactive displays.
Quite honestly, we though the examples given on their website were kind of tame compared to what we could come up with. Mostly, they show simple videos which don't play until a person walks into the view of the camera.
But, since the software can discern individual people, as well as position, their's nothing stopping it from filling a screen with images for each person. Or with videos of faces that follow the people watching the advertisement. With a little work, you could even develop an application which allowed the pedestrians to access information by walking around, or by moving toward the screen in a certain way. This is a pretty interesting opportunity, especially when combined with other recent innovations, like Vizoo's holographic projection system.
