Get Out Your Sunscreen
09/13/04
The results are finally in for the latest Bonfire contest. We had some trouble deciding the exact winners, because we got a lot of rather off-topic responses. In the end, we decided to put up the two very best designs, even though one of them is a bit of a stretch for an electronics company. So, without further ado, we present the Bonfire2: Summer Sun winners.

Thanks to everyone for their entries. We're going to hold off on the next round to give everyone a chance to get in the groove as the school year starts. Stay tuned though, Bonfire3 should be a real hoot. Think winter...
And with that, here are the winners.
PLAY Outdoor MP3 Boombox
Lyndon Craig
New Zealand

This is not a personal music player.
Too often music is treated as a personal pastime. We all enjoy music, and we all enjoy sharing our favorite tracks with our friends. Our choice of music says much about us, and helps us to get to know people.
PLAY is a product designed to inject fun and spontaneity into the act of listening to music with your friends.
PLAY is an Mp3 boom box, designed to be used outdoors - at the park, at the beach, or anywhere we congregate to socialize with friends. It is portable, has 360 degree speakers, and a large hard disk to store thousands of songs.
A wireless playlist controller can be passed around the group, allowing people to queue their own favorite tracks.
This same controller can also be mounted on numerous accessories, allowing it to be thrown like a ball, or fly through the air like a Frisbee.
The act of listening to music has now evolved to the level of a game - make up your own rules and interact with the music.
The controller is robust, lightweight and shockproof, to stand up to the rigors of being thrown and dropped. It has touch controls, and it is completely sealed, so that sand and moisture cause no problems.
The aim of PLAY is to allow listening to music to merge seamlessly with the group activities we already take part in – hanging out, and playing ball at the park or the beach, on long summer days.
We Liked:
Music used to be a social thing. Friends would get together at one another's houses to listen to records and tapes. Mostly out of necessity, because portable audio system's lower sound quality made them only a pastime until you could get to a hifi system. Now, individual access to digital quality music anywhere, all the time, has shifted the focus of music as an activity to music as a soundtrack to life. We rely more on music to music to fill the empty spaces between experiences. But it seems like there is still a place for music as an experience. This concept, thought it's still pretty rough, is an interesting answer to that question.
The Urban Deck
Ingo Rauth
Germany

The urban deck is build for city nomads who would like to spend their evenings sitting on the roof, drinking a beer and watching the open sky and the sunset.
It builds a new pace and opens a new world within a penthouse.
The foldable structure consists of aluminum and can be stored into a single bag during winter time. The size of seat is approximately 80x80 cm ( 34x34 inch ). The deck cantilevers out from existing windows to give apartment dwellers some extra outdoor space.
The deck can be adapted to nearly every roof angle by shifting front stilts and extracting the rear rakes.

How many times have you been forced to forgo the cool loft apartment with a deck for the 4th floor roof walkup because of your designer's salary? We can't wait to build one of these puppies just to be able to drink a beer with a breeze for a change. Chicago can be a hot mother during the summer.
