Why do we Design?

So it's a big question. But one worth asking. A recent Engadget bit about the new Jasper Morrison toaster brings the question of "What do designers do exactly" into sharp focus. Take a look at the comments, and you'll see everything from people who hold design up as some immaculate connection with a higher purpose, to people who advocate the democratization of design. Give us a little while on this one, we need to get our buisness in order before we even attempt a comment on this mish mash. In the mean time, why not join the fray and comment yourself. We'll have some arguments either way later today.
