Hinges, both living and dead
Here's a chance to check out two materials that seem pretty unrelated at first glance: Leather and polypropylene. While they are engineered from very different processes, some of the applications are pretty similar.
Oranges Are Good For You (And The Earth)
Two of the top stories of the last year have been that world oil production is peaking, and that climate change is real, and human-caused. And interestingly, this week, Cornel University researchers announced a new type of plastic which is a first step toward addressing both problems. Thank your lucky stars for oranges.
Your Mother Was A Hampster,
And Your Father Smelt Of Elderberries
At least that's what you might say to a product that was a biomimic. We've written about them before, but a couple new developments in materials, and a new resource or two make the topic worth another look (And it doesn't hurt that we're French, and totally excited about "Spamalot" opening in Chicago). Anyway, on to the animals.
We're big believers in sketch modeling -- making a quick bang out model can go a long way to telling you if you're on the right track, or if you've got a lemon on the drawing board. Working with pink foam or foamcore can only get you so far though, so we're always on the lookout for new materials. Today, we got some samples of a new architectural model making material called Taskboard, and we put it through the paces. See if it's right for you.
The New Blue
If you've waited in breathless anticipation to find out what the hot new color this fall is, your wait is over. Strutting down the runways this fall, brown is the new black, and Aqua is the hot new red
Silk (Screen) Merchants
In this age of digital everything, printing giant photo-realistic posters is almost easier than falling off a log. But, despite the uber-accessibility of this technology (and perhaps because of it) silk screening is enjoying a renaissance. From wallpaper to posters, T-shirts to sneakers, silk screened is the new black.
Under African Skies
Swarovski, the same clever crystallizers that made the recent SMS Chandelier possible have announced their fall collection. Titled "Out of Africa", the selection of jewelry, handbags, and home decor uses more of the colorful stones in their line than previous collections. With color and flash becoming such an important part of the "new-mod" fashion trend, the new opportunities with created stones are worth a look.
